”It is good to grasp the one and not let go of the other. Whoever fears God will avoid all extremes.” Ecclesiastes 7:18
Many ‘great’ people are lopsided (uneven, unequal) in their lives. But, in order to be great, one pretty much has to be a little off. Actors, musicians, athletes, business people and artists, can be super gifted at their craft, and also total failures in other areas of life. This is because the focus and attention it requires to be great at one thing, leaves other things neglected. Take David for example: a great warrior; musician; writer; builder and leader, but his family life was left unattended. Not our Father. He is great at everything and also well balanced in everything. God is great at every facet of life - One who is equally…
AS TOUGH…
”One thing God has spoken, two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong.” Psalm 62:11
I hate the depictions, created by society, of our God in heaven as an old white haired man, sitting mindlessly by while we do our thing. Nothing could be further from the truth. I also cringe when I hear the Lord referred to as the ‘Big Guy upstairs’. Both characteristics are totally FALSE. Our God spans the heavens with His hands, formed the mountains with His fingers and breathes the stars. The Lord is so tough that nothing fazes Him. He is never outmatched, outwitted, or outlasted - the ultimate ‘survivor’. What else is true of God is: He’s not as easily offended as we think, nor does He need anyone to defend Him.
…AS HE IS TENDER.
”And that you, O Lord, are loving…” Psalm 62:12
There is something nice about the term, ‘Gentle Giant’. Most giants (Goliath) are usually big bullies who strike fear in everyone. Well, our Father is the gentle giant, even though His reputation strikes fear in many people (some of His kids too). Jesus revealed the tender nature of God by the way He handled people: children could just run up to Jesus; sinners were given mercy; and for those who had all the answers (Pharisees) grace was given. God has never needed to prove His power so He can afford to be tender. As tough as God is, He is also our gentle giant.
