”After I am worn out…, will I now have this pleasure?” Genesis 18:12
Have you ever wanted something so badly and yet it just wasn’t coming? Time flies by and yet there’s no hope in sight. This must have been how Sarah felt. Year after year, her biological ‘clock’ ticking, and still no child - a child that her husband promised was promised by God. This kind of disappointment could certainly lead to great doubt and desperation. So desperate that Sarah ‘flung’ her maidservant at Abraham’s feet in order to call a child her ‘own’. What a mess that made. Disappointment and desperation tend to lead to reckless decisions. Sarah had to wait 25 years after receiving the promise of a son at age 65. That made her 90 years old (past viable). But God comes through if we can:
GET PAST OUR DOUBTS…
”By faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age…” Hebrews 11:11a
For a while, probably due to fatigue, Sarah struggled. We know it was a struggle because her waiting caused her to become cynical and snide. In Genesis 18:13, after restating the promise to Abraham, God said, ‘Why did Sarah laugh and say, will I really have a child now that I am old?’ When Sarah heard this she lied out of fear and said she did not laugh, but the Lord said, ‘Yes, you did laugh.’ If things don’t go as we want it is easy to become jaded toward God. But we must guard our hearts. If God promises - it happens. He said to Abraham and Sarah, ‘Is there anything too hard for the Lord?’ The good news is, Hebrews 11:11a, says ‘By faith, ‘even’ Sarah’… even though in the natural, pregnancy was nearly impossible for someone her age - she believed.
…SO GOD CAN DELIVER.
”And by faith even Sarah, …was enabled to bear children because she considered Him faithful who had made the promise.” Hebrews 11:11b
God gave Sarah a child because ultimately, she believed He was faithful. This is all God asks of us - to trust Him. We don’t have to have all the answers, of how God can do the impossible - but we can trust Him. Everyone we look up to in the Bible had to push past their doubts and just believe in God to do what He said He would do. When we do, God can deliver us from what we need saved to or from. This is what God will do for any and all - if we only believe.
